Ford takes top spot with record number of cars sold
2007 is shaping up to be a bumper year for car sales with the traditionally busy month of January setting a number of key industry records. Statistics issued by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show 46,187 cars were registered in the first month of 2007, making it the busiest month on record ever for car registrations.
And in the commercial vehicle sector, records have also tumbled: January 2007 saw 11,128 vehicles registered, another record monthly sales total.
In both the car and commercial vehicle sectors, Ford has regained its number one spot as Ireland’s most popular brand with Irish motorists. Reflecting the record-breaking figures of the overall industry, Ford has seen a few of its own records tumble during January:
- Sales figures for January were the highest monthly figures ever recorded for Ford in Ireland for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles (6,277 and 2,370 respectively).
- The Ford Focus cemented its position as Ireland’s most popular family car with sales of 3,214 – a record monthly sales figure for the car, and an all-time record for a car in a single month in Ireland, beating the previous record which was set by the Focus in January 2006;Focus, alone, represented 7% of the car market.
- The Ford Transit, winner of the 2007 International Van of the Year Award, also saw its monthly sales figure climb to record levels: 1,749 – this success comes on top of the Transit achieving the position of top selling model in Ireland (cars or vans) for four consecutive months: September, October, November and December 2006.
- The Ford Galaxy also racked up its highest ever monthly sales figure in January: 290.
- And finally, the Ford S-MAX, launched last year and winner of the 2007 European Car of the Year title, has continued to bring new customers to Ford, with a sales figure of: 230.
With combined (passenger/commercial) vehicle sales of 8,647 units, Ford not only achieved overall market leadership for January, but also set an all-time monthly volume record for any single marque.
