That's according to the company's Europe boss Lewis Booth, who also said that different environmental regulations across European countries 'inhibit' the introduction of new technology.

"We should continue to work together towards the harmonisation of standards," he said.

European carmakers are currently spending €20bn a year to improve the environmental performance of their cars.

That represents about 5% of their total revenues.
